  • NetBIOS Interface Message Processor (NIB): The NIB is responsible for encapsulating NetBIOS messages into network frames and vice versa. It interacts with the underlying network interface card (NIC) to transmit and receive data.
  • NetBIOS Workgroup: A NetBIOS workgroup is a logical grouping of computers that share resources.Computers within the same workgroup can easily communicate with each other using NetBIOS.

NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NBT)

To integrate NetBIOS with TCP/IP networks, Microsoft introduced NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NBT). NBT provides a way for NetBIOS applications to communicate over TCP/IP networks, allowing them to coexist with other TCP/IP-based applications. NBT uses TCP port 139 for session-oriented communication and UDP port 137 for name resolution.

NetBIOS and Modern Networking
